Thousands hold independence referendum rally in Erbil

ERBIL, Kurdistan - Thousands of people in the Kurdistan Region capital Erbil are holding on Wednesday a rally in support of the upcoming historical referendum on independence.

Many were seen waving the Kurdistan flag dressed in Kurdish clothes and dancing with Kurdish songs and chanting in favor of the historical process in front of Shanadar Park in Erbil.

A jubilant Kurdish woman among the crowd urged Kurds across the world not miss the chance of voting for separation from Iraq on September 25.

“Our message today is for the Kurdish nation and Kurdistanis, for women, families and the family of honorable martyrs, for brave Peshmerga to unanimously vote and say ‘Yes’ for freedom and independence so that our universities will not be destroyed, our cities will not be destroyed,” said a proud Kurdish woman among the people celebrating.

She added independence will guarantee a better future for Kurds and it is a move preventing the repetition of “chemical bombings and ISIS and the killing of our youth.”

A man dressed in Kurdish clothes urged “let us altogether on September 25 vote and say ‘Yes’ for the declaration of independence - Success is coming - God willing.”
