School opens on Mount Shingal for refugee children

SHINGAL, Kurdistan Region— An elementary school was inaugurated on Mount Shingal (Sinjar) Thursday for the children of many Yezidi families who still live there despite the liberation of their town.

Shingal mayor Mahma Khalil told Rudaw the school had the necessary equipment and resources to give both girls and boys qualified education.
 
Nearly 370 students from grade 1-9 were admitted to the school upon inauguration.
The town of Shingal was liberated last month by the Kurdish Peshmerga and the coalition air force.

Many families however still remain on the mountain or in refugee camps for fear of explosives and mines that litter their town.

Children of upper grades are left without a school which the Barzani Charity organization hopes to provide.

“There are another 300 children, who were in their last years and who need another such school to finish their education and that we hope to be able to open soon,” said the spokesperson of the Barzani Charity which has been behind the initiative.
