Shiite party 'concerned' at Hungary’s support for Kurdish independence
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, a Shiite political party, has expressed concern the Hungarian Prime Minister’s support for the potential independence of the Kurdistan region.
“We followed the Hungarian Prime Minister’s speech on support for Iraqi Kurdistan’s independence with lots of concern and worry,” said the statement, released Tuesday. “We are surprised by the role some countries are playing, including our friend Hungary, who pledged support to the cause.”
The powerful parliamentary Shiite party, which has been considered an ally to the Kurds in Iraqi parliament, emphasized the unity of Iraq and expressed concern over Hungary’s political position on Kurdistan.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Monday the government of Hungary supports nations striving for independence, including the Kurdistan region of Iraq, which he said can play a stable role in the Middle East.
