Students of a school in Erbil city have conducted a campaign to collect food and supplies for about 600 dogs in shelters for the second year, with the dogs previously being strays.
The campaign is being led by a British organization, who is distributing booklets to students that raise awareness about environmental protection and how to properly treat animals.
Bashdar Khalid, the principal of King’s School, a private school in Erbil, told Rudaw that about 500 students participated in the campaign in collaboration with a number of private NGOs.
“We want to convey the message that work must be done to collect stray dogs from the streets and provide them with a safe place,” Khalid said.
Stray dogs are often considered a menace and a public health issue in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. They are commonly shooed away, beaten, hit with sticks, and killed by cars.
A few years ago, a policeman in Erbil proudly
admitted to killing around 3,000 stray dogs, 40 of whom he shot in one night.
