ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Camp administrators at the Domiz refugee camp near Dohuk are making it easier for women in the camp to open their own businesses.
“This is a great change to increase job opportunities for everyone. The idea can be beneficial for all refugees, not just for specific groups,” Mara, one of the women in the camp, told Rudaw.
She has been allowed to open a salon, where she will take on 39 employees. She said she needs the work to support her child, who has been left fatherless because of the ongoing ISIS war.
“No one is helping me. I have to be a mother and a father for my child at the same time,” Marwa said.
The administration of the Domiz camp has given the same rights to women as men to start their own business and open shops, but women are more interested in doing jobs related to their own fields.
The administration has given permission to about 880 refugees to have their own shops inside the camp, according to camp officials.
