ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Lawmakers have elected Masrour Barzani as prime minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). He is now tasked with forming the cabinet.

The Kurdistan Region Parliament convened on Tuesday to vote for the new prime minister.

The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) nominee, who is the son of former-president Masoud Barzani, secured 87 votes among the 97 MPs who attended the session.

Lawmakers from the two Islamic parties Komal and the KIU abstained.

Masrour, the former-chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC), now has 30 days to form a government.

His cousin, Nechirvan Barzani, stepped down as prime minister after he was sworn-in as president in a ceremony in Erbil on Monday, attended by local and foreign dignitaries.

Masoud Barzani, the former president of the Kurdistan Region and head of its largest party the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), said he was "pleased" to see the installation of Masrour Barzani as premier.

"I wish him continued success and plan to fully support him in pursuit of a more developed and more prosperous Kurdistan Region," he tweeted about his son.

Formation of the new government has been slow since the Kurdistan Region held its delayed parliamentary election on September 30, 2018. Another round of government formation talks will now commence to divide government jobs between the Region’s major parties.

The KDP has already struck government formation deals with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Change Movement (Gorran).

Who is Masrour Barzani?

Masrour was born March 2, 1969 in the village of Dilman in the Balakayati area of Erbil province. He is married with three daughters and one son.

He joined the Peshmerga in 1985 and studied political sciences at the American University in Washington D.C. He later obtained master's degree in conflict resolution.

Masrour was elected to the KDP Politburo in the party’s 12th congress in 1999, and founded the Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF) in 2005.

In July 2012 he was elected chancellor of the KRSC, in charge of the Asayish and other security services.

He is honorary chancellor of the American University of Duhok.
