Nursing graduates volunteer to help cancer patients in Sulaimani
SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region – At Hiwa Hospital in Sulaimani, cancer patients especially children are largely assisted by volunteers providing them with necessary medical care.
“I wanted to come to serve child patients here,” said one volunteer. “It was one of my hopes. I wanted to become a nurse and work at Hiwa Hospital.”
Volunteers supervising the patients are required to be graduates of nursing institutes and contribute their time by working 16 hours each day and 24 hours on Fridays and holidays.
Because of their sensitive illnesses, some patients are under intensive care and even their relatives cannot see them at close range.
“I have seen these volunteers work day and night serving these patients,” said one of the cancer patients. ” I commend them for that and appreciate their work.”
Last year, 1,860 new cancer cases were recorded at Hiwa Hospital that covers their diagnosis and treatment.
