ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Security forces raided Faruk Group’s headquarters and one of the company’s cement factories in Sulaimani on Thursday, two official sources told Rudaw.
Security forces raided Faruk Holding in Sulaimani and Gasin Cement Factory in the province’s Bazyan region on Thursday, the sources told Rudaw on the condition of anonymity.
The raiding comes a month after tension arose between co-leaders of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), the ruling party in the province, where Lahur Talabany was effectively ousted from power as the PUK co-chair, after his cousin and co-chair Bafel Talabani accused him of attempting to poison him and extorting party money.
The son of the company’s owner Faruk Mustafa Rasool was accused last month by PUK media of extortion, alongside the brothers of Lahur Talabany.
It is yet unclear whether the raiding of the cement factory and Faruk holding is directly related to the internal conflicts of the PUK.
An employee of the factory told Rudaw that around 11 am a group of 25 cars raided their factory “keeping the managers and employees in custody for around an hour and a half.”
The source added that the forces who raided the factory had beaten up the guards and told the employees that the factory had been used to train illegal forces.
Another source told Rudaw that a group of armed men raided Faruk Holding in Sulaimani, the headquarter for Faruk group, a major private sector company in the province.
“They arrested someone from Faruk Holding and seized a bunch of cameras, memory cards, and hard drives,” the source told Rudaw.
Sarkawt Ahmad, the spokesperson of Sulaimani police, told Rudaw that no lawyer or owner of the company has filed a lawsuit against the forces for the raid yet.
“Faruk Holding (FH) is comprised of 27 companies operating across 12 separate sectors,” according to their official website. “FH was incorporated as a holding company, controlling the shares and companies owned by Chairman of the Board, Faruk Mustafa Rasool, in 2008.”
Lahur and Bafel Talabani reportedly had a “positive” meeting late August with the help of US and Iranian mediation.
Bafel Talabani confirmed the meeting, noting that the co-chairs have met several times since the beginning of the ordeal, including in secret meetings, but have not reached any solution.
Despite admitting to the talks, he said chances of reconciliation with his rival are non-existent. “It’s over,” he insisted.
