UPDATED:12 ISIS militants killed attempting to escape Bashiqa

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region--Kurdish forces and coalition airstrikes killed 12 ISIS militants who tried to flee the recently liberated town of  Bashiqa Tuesday morning, Brigadier Bahram Arif Yassin, a Peshmerga commander told Rudaw.

Yassin, the commander for the 7th infantry  brigade said five of the militants were killed in a Peshmerga ambush and the other seven in coalition airstrikes.

The Kurdish forces, supported by the US-led coalition airstrikes, liberated the town on Monday following a weeks-long siege.

The Peshmerga commander said they are searching the town for any remaining ISIS militants.

Brig. Gen. Musa Gardi told Rudaw on Monday following the liberation that pockets of ISIS militants remained in the town that need to be dealt with in the coming days. He warned that the remaining militants could attack the Peshmerga from tunnels they have dug across the town and with suicide car bombings.
