ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Kurdish forces in Shingal repelled a furious Islamic State attack on Saturday.

United States-led coalition warplanes bombed the terrorists, destroying two vehicles and killing several ISIS militants, a Peshmerga commander told Rudaw.

“This afternoon, Daesh [ISIS] attacked the Peshmerga outposts in Shingal with advanced weapons, but the assault was silenced by the Peshmerga and coalition warplanes, causing no casualties from the Peshmerga,” said Brig Gen. Hashim Sitai, commander of the 8th Peshmerga brigade.

“ISIS brought in new batches of forces from Mosul to Shingal, and today they launched the assault,” said Sitai. “The warplanes bombed the ISIS force seven times, destroying two military vehicles and killing 70 percent of the new ISIS force.”

In a major ground offensive last December, nearly 8,000 Kurdish fighters lifted a four-month siege on Mount Shingal. The city below the mountains, however, is still highly disputed and largely in ISIS control.
