PM Barzani proposes KRG elections on September 30
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – KRG Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani has proposed holding regional elections on September 30.
Parliamentary and presidential elections had been scheduled for November 1, 2017, but were postponed as the Kurdistan Region faced uncertainty because of Baghdad’s response to the independence vote and military takeover of the disputed areas.
The parliament in October voted to postpone elections by eight months and extend its term until elections are held.
Former president Masoud Barzani declined an extension of his term, which was already extended, leaving the position vacant. He distributed his powers to the prime minister, parliament, and judicial authorities.
Iraq is holding parliamentary elections on May 12.
