ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A man was shot and killed in the Sheikh Ahmed neighborhood in the Kurdistan Region's capital of Erbil on Friday morning, according to a statement from the Erbil police directorate.

"At 1:40 pm, the police forces of Erbil governorate were informed that a civilian had been shot and died in Sheikh Ahmed neighborhood," the statement read.

Amir Hamad Mustafa, a 33-year old man, was identified as the victim of the shooting, with no additional information currently available.

Erbil police say that they are currently investigating the cause of the incident and attempting to identify the perpetrators.

Two members of the local military police shot dead a 24-year old man in Erbil earlier this month.

In February, a driver for the Kurdistan Region's parliament was found dead near a mosque in Erbil's Araban neighborhood, with his suspected killer subsequently identified and arrested two weeks following the murder.

A woman was shot dead in Koya as she stepped out of a taxi also in February, receiving a total of 10 shots to her body.

Gun violence continues to take the lives of people across the Kurdistan Region. In 2021, 79 murders and 28 shooting incidents were recorded in Erbil, according to data from the city's police directorate.

The Kurdistan parliament in November said it is considering a new law that will impose tighter regulations for obtaining gun licenses to curb gun violence.
