ERBIL, Kurdistan Region--At least seven militants of the Islamic State (ISIS) were killed after a fierce fight with the Iraqi army on Makhmour front early Tuesday morning.
“At 4:30 am on Tuesday, ISIS launched an attack on the Iraqi army on the Makhmour front,” said Emin Shekhani, an officer in the Iraqi army.
After two and a half hours of fighting, Shekhani said, ISIS was defeated and the group suffered many casualties. The corpses of seven ISIS militants were left behind after the group retreated.
On Sunday, three more villages were retaken from the Islamic State (ISIS) and at least 29 militants were killed on the Makhmour front by the Iraqi army as part of the ongoing offensive against the group in Shargat and Gayara, in southern Mosul.
“The villages of Mehele, Hasriya, and Karma were liberated [from ISIS],” Emin Sheikhani, a Kurdish official within the Iraqi army, told Rudaw on Sunday.
