ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Over 2,200 blazes took place in Duhok province this year, with the majority of them being wildfires, said a local official on Wednesday.

Bewar Abdulaziz, spokesperson for Duhok’s civil defense department, told Rudaw that they have recorded 2,207 fires, adding that “1,602 of them were wildfires while the rest occurred at homes, public places, and gas stations.”

In April, Duhok's famous Chale bazaar caught ablaze where 100 shops burned down.

Clashes between Turkey and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in northern Duhok province also sparked numerous wildfires.

Turkey and the PKK blame each other for the many blazes.

According to Bewar Abdulaziz, the fires have claimed the lives of five people and injured 14 this year.

There have been several major fires in the Kurdistan Region recently.
