Peshmerga fight off ISIS assault on Khazir front
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Kurdish forces repelled a surprise attack by ISIS fighters early on Saturday on the Khazir front southeast of Mosul, a Peshmerga commander has told Rudaw.
“ISIS launched a massive assault against Peshmerga forces in the village of Wardak on the Khazir front and we were engaged in the battle for hours. Later, coalition warplanes arrived and we repelled the attack,” said Sarbast Mantik, head of the 5th Zeravani Special Forces.
“Several ISIS militants were killed, and they left five of the bodies behind.”
According to Mantik, the extremists used armored bulldozers to fill defense trenches the Peshmerga had dug. After the arrival of coalition warplanes, the ISIS fighters were forced to leave the vehicles behind.
Mantik said ISIS has launched multiple assaults on the Khazir front because it guards the strategic main road between the cities of Erbil and Duhok.
