First woman mayor appointed in Duhok province
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Duhok province has appointed its first woman mayor, who will represent Amedi's Bamarne district.
Miran Abdulrahman, chosen by Duhok's provincial council on Wednesday, told Rudaw she is “very happy” to be the province’s first mayoress, and has extensive experience of working in Bamarne district.
"I've been working in Bamarne's district management for 11 years. I am aware of all the issues in Bamarne and the surrounding villages,” the new mayor told Rudaw on Wednesday.
She will be sworn in by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Ministry of Interior before officially taking office.
Abdulrahman was elected alongside new mayors for the Duhok districts of Darkawr and Royiya to fill in vacant positions left by the Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU), after a 2015 agreement between the KIU and Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) to give local official posts in Duhok to KIU members was cancelled this year.
Eleven positions are still vacant.
