Turkey renews airstrikes on Sulaimani mountain, causes material damage

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Turkish warplanes renewed airstrikes on the Mount Asos region of Sulaimani on Sunday, causing material damages among locals, confirmed an official.

Kamaran Hassan, mayor of Mawat, told Rudaw that Turkish fighter jets started bombing Mount Asos near Galala village in Mawat on Sunday afternoon damaging farms and beehives.

He said the bombings caused no casualties.

Turkey has not confirmed or denied the claims.

In the course of the past month, the Turkish military has confirmed that its warplanes carried out a series of airstrikes on Mount Asos allegedly targeting Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) positions.

The first attack was in the beginning of November and the last one was last week when the Turkish military claimed it had destroyed 41 PKK targets, including shelters and tunnels.

Turkey frequently carries out airstrikes against alleged PKK positions in Kurdistan’s mountains. The PKK has its headquarters in the Qandil Mountains near the border of Turkey.

The PKK and the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK), an Iranian Kurdish group, are believed to have bases in the Mount Asos area.

Mount Asos in Mawat town in Sharbazher region is 55 kilometers (34 miles) from Sulaimani.
