ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Akoyan valley in Rawanduz is well-known for its grapes, with thousands of tons being produced in the Kurdistan Region every year.

Tahsin Ibrahim, a local farmer, showcases his grape harvest, made up of over 70 types of grapes. He has been growing grapes for the past four years, observing them to see which type yields the best results.

“Right now, with the grapes that I produce, we have over 80 varieties. However, there are about 25 varieties that work well in our environment and give good results, and from those, twelve of them are the very best,” Ibrahim said.

“Each cluster weighs around 4 to 5 kilos,” he explained.

There are over 100 types of grapes produced in the Kurdistan Region, ‘Rashmiri’ grapes being the most notable of them.

Approximately 35-thousand tons of grapes are sold every year. 21,683 tones of locally produced grapes were sold in 2020. This year, it has increased to nearly 30-thousand tons
