Erbil, Kurdistan Region - More than 200 publishing companies from 20 different countries have gathered in Erbil for a renowned annual book event billed by its opening speaker as an "oasis of culture."

The 10th Erbil International Book Fair was opened on Thursday in the city’s Sami Abdulrahman Park with Masoud Barzani, president of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), in attendance.

The fair was organized by the Baghdad-based Al Mada Publishing House in cooperation with the KRG Ministry of Culture.

"[T]he book fair is not merely a book market. Safe and secure Kurdistan, in the new Iraq, hosts this book fair as a free oasis for culture ... it showcases the latest updates in the world of culture, science and ideas, thereby establishing a solid foundation to enable other parts of the country to build the proper infrastructure until security and stability are realized there," said Fakhri Kareem, Al Mada chairman.

Nearly 700,000 books in Kurdish, English, Arabic and Persian are showcased, with discounts available on various books, as well as the latest publications in languages from around the region and the world.

The Erbil International Book Fair will be held until April 12.
