ISIS militant who beheaded Peshmarga murdered in Mosul

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region -- The ISIS militant believed to have decapitated a Peshmarga last month was reportedly killed by a fellow militant in Mosul, a source inside the city told Rudaw.

The source said the man was gunned downed in the early hours of Monday in what appeared to be an assassination by a Kurdish militant within the ranks of the Islamic State.

Peshmarga officer Hujam Surchi was beheaded last January in Mosul in front of a large crowd. The executioner, later was identified as Mofaq Asaad, was also a Kurd who was known to security agencies for his ties to radical groups.

The gruesome murder sparked public outrage in the Kurdistan region with many demanding the killer be found and brought to justice.

Kurdish intelligence said Asaad and his two brothers joined ISIS in Mosul when the militants captured the majority Sunni city.

The three brothers had worked as bakers in the Kurdish city of Barda Rash, north of Erbil, prior to the ISIS offensive. Security sources said Asaad’s brothers had been killed by the Peshmarga in earlier clashes.

Although Asaad’s killing has not been independently confirmed, another source in Mosul told Rudaw by phone that crowds of ISIS gunmen had gathered at his home in the ISIS-held city.
