ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Over 1200 kilograms of narcotics have been seized in the Kurdistan Region since 2019, and over 5000 people have been arrested for dealing and using drugs since then, the Region’s anti-narcotics department announced on Saturday.

According to data released by the Kurdistan Region’s anti-narcotics general directorate, 5,419 people have been arrested in different areas of the Region between 2019 and June 2022 for the use and dealing of different narcotic drugs.

The report specified that in the first six months of 2022 alone, the number of people arrested for being in possession of different drugs was 999 people.

The drugs that had been seized in that period included crystal meth, heroin, hashish, marijuana, and a number of other narcotic drugs.

During the three and a half years, the anti-narcotics department has seized just over 1217 kilograms of drugs.

The Kurdistan Region and Iraq have seen an increase in drug trafficking and use. Numbers have been on the rise since the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003.

Last year, authorities in the Kurdistan Region warned that drug use and trafficking were on the rise.

The Region lacks rehabilitation centers for drug addicts, as well as resources to raise awareness about the repercussions of drug use. Most drug consumers end up arrested rather than rehabilitated.
