ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - People from all walks of life in the Kurdistan Region, on Fridays, flock to a local poultry and bird market in Sulaimani province's Hajiyawa sub-district.
The market on Fridays, a holiday for the bulk of the people of the Kurdistan Region, is a hustle and bustle. They come to the spot to buy their favorite poultry and birds.
In the market, many kinds of birds are available to purchase for their meat, with geese and turkeys being the most popular. People buy them for special dinner events, family gatherings, or winter picnics during this time of the year.
Firas Siddiq, director of animal resources in the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) agriculture ministry, told Rudaw on Sunday that the Kurdistan Region produces 240 thousand tons of chicken meat per year, 93 thousand of which are exported to central and southern Iraq.
Birds could be found almost everywhere throughout the market, yet, sellers argue that none of them could beat the Kurdish goose, fed on natural foods and free-ranging open fields.
However, they complain that prices have gone up compared with the previous years due to high demand.
"In the past, the price of no goose would exceed 40-45,000 dinars. But, now, if you want to buy a good goose, the price is up to 65-70,000 dinars," Omer Ibrahim, a local resident of the Hajiyawa sub-district told Rudaw, calling the price hikes "a big disaster."
According to Siddiq, there are over 2,261 livestock projects in the Kurdistan Region, 1,840 of which are poultry, and have a production capacity of over 30 million chickens.
