Duhok film fest to feature Yilmaz Guney documentary

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The Duhok International Film Festival (Duhok IFF) will feature a special screening of a documentary about Kurdish filmmaker Yilmaz Guney.

The Legend of the Ugly King, directed by Huseyin Tabak, tells the story of Guney through the eyes of his family and friends. It pays “homage to the director’s rich as well as turbulent life” 33 years after his death, Duhok IFF stated in a press released.

Guney wrote and directed the Palme d’Or-winning film Yol from inside prison. He was jailed for his political activities and later for shooting a judge.

Guney’s friend and collaborator Edi Hubschmid sat down with Rudaw last year and talked about his relationship with the filmmaker and how he helped Guney escape Turkey for Europe.

As the film digs more into Guney’s life, it discovers “the legendary ugly king appears human and vulnerable,” states Duhok IFF.

The screening of The Legend of the Ugly King will follow the film’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

TIFF describes the film as “a rich biographical tapestry and a heartfelt homage to a filmmaker whose relentless integrity and creativity inspire to this day.”

The film will screen on September 14 and will be attended by producer Mehmet Aktas and Guney’s daughter Elif Guney Putun.
