Erbil-Makhmour road to reopen on Monday

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Erbil-Makhmour road is set to be reopened on Monday after several months of closure.

 

"Tomorrow (Monday) the Erbil-Makhmour road, known as the Bazarga road, will be reopened. Opening the road is in the interest of the citizens," Sirwan Barzani, the commander of Peshmerga forces on the Makhmour-Gwer front, told Rudaw.

 

The road was closed following clashes between Peshmerga forces and Iraqi and Iranian-backed Hashed al-Shabi militias after the October 16 events in Kirkuk.

“There were discussions with the Iraqi forces and they have assented to reopening the road,” Barzani further revealed.

The closure of this main road has resulted in much hardship for the population of the town, with some deaths occurring as people were trying to use a more dangerous road full of potholes. 

 

The Kirkuk-Erbil road is still effectivelly closed as well following the Pirde (Altun Kupri) bridge being destroyed in clashes, but the KRG says it is ready to open all roads.
