ERBIL,Kurdistan Region - The international community should take measures against drones, similar to those taken against ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons, a drone expert said in an interview with Rudaw earlier this month.
“One thing is to try to restrict the sale and transfer of these drones from the countries who have them to countries who need them”, said John Krzyzaniak from the Wisconsin project in an interview with Rudaw’s Roj Eli Zalla during the second annual Erbil Forum.
According to Krzyzaniak, the international community should develop control measures to limit the spread worldwide.
Krzyzaniak is an associate researcher at Wisconsin Project, which is a non-profit, non-partisan research center that carries out research and public education designed to stop the spread of nuclear weapons, chemical or biological weapons and long-range missiles.
“The major element of geography is the size; small areas can be defended better than larger areas”, said Krzyzaniak in response to a question about the geography of Kurdistan region being prone to drone attacks, adding that "the smaller the space you have, the better. I don’t know whether a flat terrain or a mountain would matter so much in that sense".
Erbil has been the target of several drone and missile attacks in the past with the most notable being in March last year, striking the residence of a Kurdish businessman under the pretext of hitting Israeli bases.
Last November, several drone attacks were carried out targeting the members of the Kurdistan Freedom Party (PAK) in the town of Pirde, along the Erbil-Kirkuk provincial border, which social media accounts affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary guards (IRGC) claimed responsibility for.
