Americans celebrate Thanksgiving in Sulaimani
SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region — American families living in Sulaimani gathered to celebrate Thanksgiving, a holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States and Brazil.
"Thanksgiving is usually a holiday that you celebrate with your family in America. But for all of us, we live and we work here," American expat Matt Oshel said.
"We became like a family for one another. We’re able to get together enjoy the holiday together and really the focus is on giving thanks. So, we take time this is on giving thanks so we take special time today we celebrate. We set it aside to thank God for all that he has done last year."
Juanna, the head of a language centre in Sulaimani, woke up at 4:00 am to prepare the food. Seven hours later, the feast, which includes the customary turkey, is ready.
Language teacher Bahram Fazel and his American wife were among the dinner's attendees. The couple met at his workplace, and they tied the knot in June.
