ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – German filmmaker and author Edgar Reitz, the winner of the Berlinale Camera award at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival, told Rudaw on Thursday that winning such awards makes him reflect back on the highlights of his long career.

“I start looking back at the many years I have been making films and I start thinking about the highlights,” Reitz, who is 91-years-old, told Rudaw’s Payam Sarbast.

“It was very interesting to teach these people that they should talk about their personal interests. I had to teach them that film is a medium where you can talk about your interests and that filmmakers do that – they are a mirror of society,” he said.

The Berlinale, Europe’s first major film festival of the year, kicked off on Thursday and will last ten days, during which around 200 films of all genres are screened. A Rudaw team is covering the cultural event on the ground.

“Edgar Reitz is one of the most influential filmmakers of his generation; he has created an oeuvre that will forever remain a milestone in the history of cinema,”  Executive Director Mariëtte Rissenbeek and Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian said about Reitz.

Reitz is the recipient of multiple awards, including the German Film Award, a Silver Lion award at the Venice Film Festival, as well as a BAFTA Television Award.

The director began his career in the cinematic world in the 1950s and is a big name of the German film industry.
