Famed Kurdish actor Salam Koye dies at 66
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Famous Kurdish actor Salam Koye died of a stroke at the age of 66 in Erbil city early Tuesday morning, according to his family.
Born in 1955, Koye started his acting career in the early 1970s. He spent almost 50 years of his life acting in Kurdish drama. He had roles in 150 plays and tens of films and TV shows. His last work was the Kurdish drama “Dwa Shew” or “The Last Night,” which was broadcast in 2020.
Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) head Masoud Barzani and Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani offered their condolences on his passing.
Koye started his career as an artist at a very young age, said Nechirvan Barzani, and “his memory will live on through his works.”
The British Consulate General in Erbil also offered its condolences.
Koye was a friend in rough times, actor Ibrahim Hakeem, who first met Koye in 1975, told Rudaw’s Banu Dilshad.
Koye was recently diagnosed with diabetes and had open-heart surgery two years ago. He suffered a stroke on Monday night and passed away in an Erbil hospital the next morning.
Fulfilling his instructions, Koye’s coffin was carried through Erbil’s main bazaar before his burial.
