ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Shawkat Amin Korki’s The Exam will be Iraq’s official entry in the 2023 Academy Awards, more commonly known as the Oscars, marking the seventh time a Kurdish film has represented Iraq for the prestigious award.
The film tells the story of a high school senior approaching her decisive finals, which would undoubtedly determine the course of her life moving forward, as she struggles to battle the societal expectations of a young girl at her age.
The selection of a Kurdish film to represent Iraq at the Oscars is a testament to the progression of Kurdish cinema, Korki told Rudaw’s Pasar Fayaq on Sunday.
The Exam will compete with hundreds of other films from around the world, out of which only five will be shortlisted as the final nominees contending for the Best International Feature Film category at the 95th Academy Awards.
Iraq first submitted films for the Oscars in 2005 and has since submitted 10 other pictures, seven of which have been in Kurdish language. No film from Iraq has ever been shortlisted for the award.
This is the second time a film by Korki has been selected as Iraq’s entry, after the selection of Memories on Stone in 2015.
