Ancient houses of Akre being renovated after floods

Akre is an ancient town 100 kilometers east of Duhok in the Kurdistan Region. The picturesque towns draws thousands of tourists from around Iraq and the world each year.

However, heavy rains this winter destroyed many of the town’s ancient homes and structures. Even before this, some of the the thousands-of-years-old homes were falling into disrepair.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) allotted funds to rebuild the town in 2011, but was unable to deliver them all after the financial crisis of 2014.

Now, some locals are rebuilding the town using stones from collapsed houses they transport via donkeys.
