ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdish artists and Amedspor supporters have gathered in Hildesheim, Germany, for a concert celebrating the Kurdish football club, with officials and participants describing the team as a symbol of identity and unity among the Kurds in Europe.
Nihad Eren, president of Amedspor, told Rudaw's Zinar Shino at the concert on Saturday that when they entered the Turkish Super League, they wanted to congratulate Amed. “We delivered a speech there. We said Amedspor has a different flavor. We said Amedspor is a different identity,” Eren said.
Amedspor secured promotion to Turkey's top-flight Super League for the first time in its history in May 2026, after finishing second in the second division with 74 points.
Last week, the club came from behind to beat Samsunspor 2-1 away on Saturday, provisionally climbing to the top of Turkey’s Super League table in a remarkable start to its debut season in the country’s top flight.
Amedspor's presence in Turkey's top division has become a source of pride for many Kurds, particularly those living abroad who regard the club as more than a mere football team but as a symbol of Kurdish identity and representation.
“Amedspor is a symbol for us,” said Momaeed Akbash, a Kurdish singer from Amed. “Art and sports are very important for a people like us. They give us status, strength and a global presence.”
Azad Badran, another singer, described the club as “not just a football team” but an identity and a history.
“The success of Amedspor is also the success of the Kurdish people,” he said, calling on Kurds to support other Kurdish clubs, including Kurdistan Region’s Zakho SC and Qamishlo Sport in northeast Syria (Rojava).
The Saturday concert also featured performances by Koma Amed, a pioneering and influential Kurdish folk and protest music group. One of the group's lead singers, Serhat Karakas, said they hoped to compose a special anthem for Amedspor, noting that work on the lyrics was still at an early stage.
Amedspor is a Kurdish football club based in Diyarbakir (Amed), southeastern Turkey, competing in the country's top-flight Super League.
The club's performances in Turkey's top division have drawn enthusiasm among Kurdish communities in Europe, with supporters and artists using concerts and other cultural events to express their backing.
