ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - An oil worker was killed and another was wounded after two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire Sunday on an oil company convoy near Qamishli in northeast Syria (Rojava), the Syrian Interior Ministry said.
In a statement, the ministry said that the attack took place in the afternoon opposite Qadoba Private University on the international road near the Ambara Junction in Qamishli.
“The attack resulted in the death of 18-year-old Abdulaziz Faisal Hassan and the injury of his colleague,” the ministry said, adding that both victims were “employees of the al-Jazira Oil Company” and were accompanying the security patrol to be taken to an oil tanker escort convoy at the request of the company's escort department.”
“The two attackers fled the scene,” read the statement.
Meanwhile, the Hasaka Media Directorate said in a statement that two “unidentified gunmen targeted a vehicle belonging to the Internal Security Forces on the M4 international highway connecting the cities of Hasaka and Qamishli.”
The incident comes amid the ongoing security concerns in Hasaka province. On Friday, 11 Syrian soldiers were killed in an explosion at a military position in the eastern province of Deir ez-Zor. The blast was the second of its kind at a Syrian military facility in less than two weeks.
No group has claimed responsibility for Sunday’s attack. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the identities of the attackers and the motive behind the attack were not immediately known.
Earlier this month, an explosion at a temporary weapons and war-remnants storage facility near Sarmada in Idlib killed 14 defense ministry personnel and wounded more than 10 others, including civilians, according to the state-run SANA news agency.
The Syrian Observatory reported earlier this month that a young man was killed by unknown gunmen in Qamishli's airport neighborhood, while the Internal Security Forces later detained two people in connection with the killing.
The latest attack comes as authorities continue efforts to strengthen security in Hasaka, including the deployment of Internal Security Forces and road patrols along the M4, SANA reported earlier this month.
