ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Syria’s foreign ministry on Saturday condemned renewed Iranian drone and missile attacks targeting Kurdistan Region and several Arab countries in the region, saying the attacks violated states’ sovereignty and international law, with Kurdish political parties in northeast Syria (Rojava) also voicing their opposition to the strikes.
In a statement, the ministry said Damascus “strongly condemns” the Iranian attacks and expressed “full solidarity” with its “brotherly nations” and the affected countries.
On Friday, nine members of the Komala Toilers of Kurdistan were killed and several others wounded after six missiles struck the group’s headquarters in Zirgwez, Sulaimani province, a town hosting camps belonging to Iranian-Kurdish opposition groups.
Over the past two days, Iran struck several locations in the Kurdistan Region's Erbil and Sulaimani provinces.
The ministry said the attacks, carried out with drones and missiles, represented “a direct threat to the security and stability” of the targeted areas and violated the UN Charter and international law.
“Syria rejects everything that contributes to destabilizing the security of the region,” the statement said, calling for respect for states’ sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Meanwhile, Mazloum Abdi, General Commander of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) condemned the attack, saying that it targets “the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region.”
Separately, several political parties in northeast Syria (Rojava) also condemned what they described as Iranian attacks using missiles and explosive drones against the Kurdistan Region and camps housing refugees from the western areas of Iran, known as Rojhelat.
The parties said in a statement that the attacks targeted civilian refugee camps and called on the Iraqi federal government, the United Nations (UN), and the international community to take measures to protect civilians and prevent further violations.
“This systematic military escalation is not only a violation of the sovereignty of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region but also a crime targeting humanity," the statement read.
The latest Iranian attacks on the Kurdistan Region come amid a renewed exchange of fire between Tehran and Washington.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said early Saturday that it ended a seventh consecutive night of strikes against Iran late Friday. Iran's army said it targeted US military sites in Kuwait and Jordan in the 14th phase of its Operation Sa'eqa in response to US strikes on Iran.
