ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Erbil traffic police have intensified a crackdown on unlicensed and reckless motorcycles, confiscating a number of bikes accused of disturbing the public during outings and leisure activities.
Hemin Amin, spokesperson for the Erbil Traffic Directorate, said on Saturday authorities are working in full coordination with local police to target motorcycles used for “showing off” and causing disruptions.
The move comes as part of broader efforts to curb motorcycle-related disturbances and accidents in the Kurdistan Region. Authorities have repeatedly launched similar campaigns in recent years following a rise in traffic violations and public complaints about noise and dangerous driving.
“We have full coordination with Erbil police regarding the seizure of motorcycles. All motorcycles used for showing off and disturbing people will be confiscated,” he told Rudaw.
Erbil police released footage on Friday showing several confiscated motorcycles, saying the campaign aims to preserve public calm, particularly during busy leisure periods when families gather in public spaces, including spring picnics.
Officials warned that riders who perform stunts or drive recklessly on streets, endangering themselves and others, will face strict measures. Unregistered motorcycles will be seized, while registered ones involved in violations will be subject to legal action.
The campaign will continue during holidays and regular days alike, police said, urging riders to follow traffic laws or risk confiscation and penalties.
Motorcycles remain a challenge for traffic enforcement, with many lacking proper registration or safety compliance, contributing to road accidents and disorder.
