ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - At least two explosive-laden drones targeted a base belonging to an Iranian Kurdish opposition group in Erbil province late Thursday, causing material damage but no casualties, a party official said.
Shorsh Haji, head of relations for the Khabat Organization of Iranian Kurdistan (Khabat), told Rudaw's Sirwan Abbas that the drones damaged the base and its surroundings. He said the facility had been evacuated before the attack.
The Khabat Organization of Iranian Kurdistan is one of several Iranian Kurdish opposition groups based in the Kurdistan Region that Tehran considers separatist.
The Erbil-based Directorate General of Counter Terrorism (CTD) confirmed that two explosive-laden drones targeted a base belonging to an Iranian Kurdish group, without identifying the group. It said the attack caused no casualties.
The attack targeted the group's base in Rizgari subdistrict, also known as Topzawa, in Erbil province's Khabat district.
The Kurdistan Region has faced more than 1,000 drone and missile attacks by Tehran and Iran-aligned Iraqi armed groups since the US and Israel launched a joint military campaign against Iran on February 28, according to official figures. As of mid-September, the attacks had killed at least 32 people and wounded around 154 others.
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has repeatedly condemned the strikes, urging the federal government in Baghdad to prevent attacks launched from or through Iraqi territory.
In an interview with Rudaw aired on Thursday, Iranian Consul General Faramarz Asadi repeatedly declined to say whether Tehran would halt its attacks on alleged targets in the Kurdistan Region following the US withdrawal, claiming that “security forces and formations of the CIA are still here [in the Kurdistan Region] and continue sowing discord.”
“If they at any moment want to make a move against the Islamic Republic of Iran, they will be targeted as part of American interests and targets,” he warned.
