ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received Britain’s newly appointed Consul General Holly Vare on Sunday, discussing efforts to strengthen bilateral ties as well as the latest developments in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq and the region at large.
President Nechirvan Barzani “welcomed and congratulated Ms. Vare on her appointment and wished her success in her new mission as British Consul General in the Kurdistan Region,” expressing the Kurdistan Region's readiness to “support her efforts to further develop relations between the UK and the Kurdistan Region,” according to a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency.
Vare in turn expressed her pleasure “to meet with the president of the Kurdistan Region and to begin her duties as British consul general,” affirming her commitment to “continue working to further develop relations between Britain and the Kurdistan Region across all areas.”
This comes as Britain has maintained diplomatic and political engagement with the Kurdistan Region, with cooperation between the two sides spanning political, economic, defense, and security relations.
Holly Vare, who succeeds Andrew Bizley as new British Consul General in the Kurdistan Region, served as the deputy head of mission for the British embassy to Yemen and deputy head of the Iraq and Arabian Peninsula department in the foreign commonwealth and development office prior to her appointment in Erbil.
Vare met with Kurdish leaders following her post to discuss expanding UK engagements which also include contributions to energy, trade, and education sectors.
