ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani is expected to visit Damascus on Monday in the first official visit of its kind by a Kurdistan Region president since Syria's political transition, a Rudaw reporter in Damascus confirmed on Sunday.
During the visit, President Barzani is scheduled to meet with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and other top Syrian officials.
The visit follows a series of high-level communications and prior convenings between Erbil and Damascus over the past two years, including President Barzani's meetings with Sharaa in Antalya and other top Syrian officials on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.
The visit comes amid growing diplomatic engagement between the Kurdistan Region and Syria's new leadership, as well as ongoing regional security challenges following months of conflict between the United States and Iran.
In April, President Barzani and Sharaa held a phone call during which they discussed the regional war and its repercussions for the Kurdistan Region.
The two leaders emphasized the need to strengthen diplomatic efforts to end the conflict through peaceful means and stressed the importance of preserving peace and stability in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
During the phone call, the two leaders also discussed the situation of Kurds and other communities in Syria, bilateral relations between Syria and Iraq, and other issues of mutual interest, signaling continued efforts to deepen ties between Erbil and Damascus under Syria's new administration.
