ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Kurdistan Freedom Party (PAK), an Iranian Kurdish opposition group, said Iran carried out three drone strikes on one of its military bases early Monday, without disclosing the exact location. The attack came as tensions between Tehran and Washington escalated following a new round of US strikes inside Iran.
PAK maintains a presence only in Erbil province.
"The Iranian regime launched three consecutive drone attacks against the Peshmarga base of the Kurdistan National Army," PAK said in a statement, referring to its military arm.
The group did not immediately report casualties or material damage, and Iran has not claimed responsibility for the strikes.
The drone attacks came hours after the United States launched a fresh wave of strikes on Iranian military targets, saying the operation was intended to "degrade Iran's ability to continue attacking international shipping flowing through the Strait of Hormuz."
"CENTCOM forces struck Iranian military air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats using U.S. fighter aircraft, naval vessels, one-way attack aerial drones, and one-way attack sea drones for the first time," CENTCOM said in a statement.
The renewed confrontation followed an Iranian attack on a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, which forced the crew to abandon ship after it caught fire.
Following the latest exchange of fire, US President Donald Trump announced the end of the ceasefire.
The latest exchanges have further strained an interim US-Iran agreement meant to halt months of conflict that began in late February.
PAK and other Iranian Kurdish opposition parties based in the Kurdistan Region have endured hundreds of drone and missile strikes since the war began.
The United States and Israel launched a large-scale military campaign against Iran on February 28, targeting nuclear facilities, military sites, and senior commanders. The six-week conflict ended with a ceasefire on April 8, followed by a 60-day memorandum of understanding signed on June 17 to resume talks on Iran's nuclear program and regional security.
