ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The general director of the Kurdistan Region's correctional facilities presented statistical data regarding adult, women, and juvenile incarcerations across Erbil, Sulaimani, and Duhok provinces during a press conference on Monday.
"In the first six months of this year, 4094 inmates entered the reformatory directorates to serve their sentences, at the same time, 3565 inmate release transactions were executed and they returned to their families and 676 inmates were conditionally released," stated General Director Ihsan Baban.
The General Directorate of Social Reform oversees facilities in Erbil, Sulaimani and Duhok. The centers house inmates while providing rehabilitation, education, and healthcare services to aid in their reintegration into society.
Regarding rehabilitation, 226 inmates participated in drug addiction support groups and received health treatments, while an additional 10 inmates were released on special pardon. Within the education programs, 534 inmates studied inside the reformatory schools, and 35,864 visits were made by inmates to the correctional facility library.
During the first half of the year, the directorates conducted 238 training courses, seminars, and workshops for staff and inmates, and delivered 73 religious sermons inside the facilities.
Iraq and the Kurdistan Region remain both a destination and a transit route for narcotics. A report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime describes the country as a “conduit” for drug flows between Southwest Asia, the Arabian Peninsula, and Europe, while highlighting a surge in Captagon trafficking from Syria and rising domestic consumption.
