ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Two bomb-laden drones struck a grain storage facility southwest of Erbil on Thursday, causing significant economic damage but no casualties, according to the Kurdistan Region's counter-terrorism service, which condemned the attack as targeting civilian areas.
“A grain warehouse in the Qushtapa district of Erbil province was attacked by two booby-trapped drones from the Hadid-110 type,” the Kurdistan Region’s Counter-Terrorism Service (CTG) said in a statement, adding, "We strongly condemn these terrorist attacks that target civilian areas."
The CTG said the attack resulted in "significant economic damages" but caused no casualties.
The statement came after Iranian state media earlier on Thursday reported an attack on the same location, though it identified a different type of drone. Citing "Iraqi sources," the report said that two Shahed-136 suicide drones "struck a warehouse of Kurdish separatists terrorists" in the district near Erbil.
Following the outbreak of the six-week war between Iran, the US, and Israel, Tehran intensified attacks targeting Iranian Kurdish opposition groups in the Kurdistan Region. The strikes, alongside attacks by pro-Iran armed groups, have continued despite a ceasefire reached between Washington and Tehran in April.
Rudaw has learned that a housing camp associated with Sazmani Khabat, an Iranian Kurdish dissident group, is located in the area, though it is not close to the grain facility.
Iran considers Kurdish opposition groups to be "separatists" and "terrorists," viewing their presence as a threat to national security.
Under a 2023 security agreement with Baghdad, Tehran secured the partial disarmament of the Kurdish groups and their withdrawal from border areas, with members relocated to around seven camps near the centers of Erbil and Sulaimani.
According to Rudaw's tracking, the Kurdistan Region has been hit by nearly 866 drones and missiles between February 28 and Tuesday. The attacks have killed 20 people and injured 135 others.
Kurdish authorities have repeatedly called on Iran to halt the attacks and have affirmed the Kurdistan Region's neutrality.
