ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - An Iranian army base in western Iran’s Kurdish majority areas (Rojhelat) was reportedly targeted by a US airstrike on Friday, Iran’s state media relayed, shortly after the US Central Command said its forces had “successfully completed” the thirteenth consecutive night of strikes against Iran.
The state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) cited Hamed Saffari, Director General of Crisis Management for Urmia, the capital of Rojhelat’s West Azerbaijan province, as stating that “at 9 am local time, an Iranian army headquarters was targeted by a US strike in Piranshahr county,” south of Urmia.
Saffari added that “several powerful explosions were heard in Piranshahr” and that “the attack caused damage to several vehicles near the site of the bombardment,” adding that there is currently “no information regarding the casualties.”
Meanwhile, a video clip shared with Rudaw showed smoke rising from two locations inside the army headquarters.
The incident notably coincided with the Iranian army on Friday claiming a new wave of attacks on US targets in Bahrain and Jordan, state-affiliated media reported, hours after the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said its forces had “successfully completed” the thirteenth night of consecutive strikes on Iran.
"In continuation of the Islamic Republic of Iran Army's drone strikes," Iranian armed forces earlier on Friday struck the US military's "fuel storage tanks, large equipment warehouses, hangars and troop quarters... at the Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain, using Arash kamikaze drones,” the army's public relations department said in a statement carried by the state-run Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA).
The US military's "aircraft hangars, aircraft maintenance facilities and housing quarters" at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan's al-Azraq region "were also targeted by Army drone strikes," the statement added, warning that "any action taken against the legitimate and legal interests of the [Iranian] nation" would "also compromise the security and economic interests of other countries in the region."
The Iranian forces framed the attacks as part of their response to the ongoing US strikes across Iranian territory, the latest of which included overnight strikes on Friday on Andimeshk, Omidiyeh and Ahvaz in Iran’s southwestern Khuzestan province; the port city of Bandar Abbas and nearby Qeshm Island in the southern Hormozgan province; and the Firuzabad region in the southern Fars province as well, according to Iranian state media.
For its part, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that its forces "successfully completed" a thirteenth consecutive night of strikes against Iran on Friday, adding that targets included "military command centers, drone storage facilities, communication networks, coastal surveillance sites and maritime capabilities."
In a previous statement, the Command said that since the naval blockade against Iran resumed nine days ago, its forces had "redirected 12 commercial vessels and disabled one to prevent ships from entering or leaving Iranian ports and coastal areas."
