ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iranian authorities executed another protester on Wednesday involved in the January anti-government protests during which thousands of protesters were gunned down by security forces, Iran state media reported.
Mohammad Amini Dehaghani was hanged in Dehaghan in Isfahan province for politically motivated charges of moharebeh, waging war against God, and efsad‑e‑fel‑arz, corruption on earth, for allegedly attacking government buildings and security forces. Other charges against him included republishing propaganda, requesting contact with “anti-revolutionary user accounts in cyberspace and requesting weapons,” and sending images containing war equipment to cyberspace users.
"The individual responsible for setting fire to the Governor's Office, destroying public property in Imam Hussein Square, and attacking the central police station in the city of Dehaqan was hanged this morning," Mehr reported, referring to CCTV footage in which it was “determined” that Dehaghani "had two Molotov cocktails,” one of which “he threw at the governor's office and the other at the police station.”
"Some of the individuals present in the riots were carrying firearms, including a Kalashnikov assault rifle. They had stolen the weapon from officers. I asked them to give me the weapon so I could fire it," Dehaghani said.
The execution comes as Iranian authorities have intensified their crackdown following conflict with the United States and Israel that began in late February. Recent cases have involved allegations of espionage for Israel, participation in January's nationwide protests and links to dissident groups.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly condemned authorities in Tehran for using torture and inhumane tactics to coerce political prisoners into confessing to trumped-up charges which are then used to convict and hang the defendants.
Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported 2,063 executions carried out by Iran in 2025- the highest figure recorded in roughly three and a half decades.
Iran has executed dozens of political prisoners since the beginning of the war with the US and Israel on February 28. Officials in Tehran have said they will carry out more executions of individuals they describe as affiliated with the enemy.
Anti-government demonstrations swept across Iran in January after the death of Zhina Amini, a Kurdish woman from the Kurdistan province while in the custody of Iran’s morality police for wearing a loose hijab, and morphed into larger protests following the collapse of the national currency and spiraling economic downturn fueled by the US-Iran war since late February.
Tehran has not released an updated official death toll from the unrest. However, Amnesty International and other monitoring groups say thousands of demonstrators were killed in the crackdown, particularly on January 8 and 9, when security forces reportedly used live ammunition against the crowds.
President Trump recently placed the number of protesters killed by the Iranian regime at 52,000.
