Duhok farmer's market proudly provides local products

BAGERA, Kurdistan Region — This weekly market in Duhok province’s town of Bagera was initiated to provide a livelihood to farmers and healthy products to locals and tourists.

It was launched on Friday and features products from 20 different farmers, including three women.

“The difference between this weekly market and other regular ones is that the products are organic and do not contain any preservatives,” said farmer Helan Jamal.

The customers are locals as well as tourists from across the province.

“We have come from Duhok [city]. On our way, we passed this market. We like it because organic products are our favorite,” said Sarkawt Ahmed, a customer. “We want more of these markets opened. They are important to our farmers. People benefit from their products, but I wish they were cheaper.”

The town’s agricultural advisory department monitors the market. Only local, seasonal products are allowed to be sold here.

“Both farmers and customers benefit from it. Farmers can sell their products directly after harvesting them. Customers also purchase organic, healthy and fresh products that contain no chemical pesticides,” said Shirin Abdulghani, head of the agricultural advisory department in Bagera.
