ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – A group of people from Erbil visited the tomb of Mullah Mustafa Barzani on Wednesday to commemorate his death.
Barzani was the father of Kurdish former president Masoud Barzani. He is considered by Kurds as “immortal” due to his contribution to the Kurdish question during his lifetime.
The group was headed by Ahmed Kani head of the Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP)’s 2nd Branch in Erbil. Masoud Barzani’s representative Khalat Barzani received the group.
A speech was delivered by a representative of the Christian community in Erbil. They stressed the preservation of “achievements in Kurdistan which were achieved through the hard work of this leader and the blood shed in the past by Kurdistan’s citizens.”
“We must also work together for a brighter future in Kurdistan.”
A mullah also gave a speech, reiterating that although Barzani is now dead, “his spirit is among us.” He said Barzani taught people to stand up against oppression and “we have to follow his path.”
Barzani is the founder of the KDP, the biggest party in the Kurdistan Region.
He led the Kurdish revolutionary struggle in the middle of twentieth century up to the 1970s.
After developing lung cancer he traveled to the United States for treatment. He died at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington D.C. on March 1, 1979. He was buried in Oshnavieh, Iran.
At the request of Kurds in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, his remains were brought back to the region in 1993. He is now buried in his hometown of Barzan, alongside his son Idris Barzani, father of KRG Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani.
People from different parts of Kurdistan and the world visit Barzani’s tomb on March 1 and March 12 to commemorate his death and his birth.
