Kurds will demonstrate in France
Amsterdam - On Saturday 10 October Kurds will demonstrate in France against the expulsion
of the PKK-leader Abdullah Ocalan from Syria and for the recognition of Ocalan
as a partner for dialogue in the democratic initiative of the Turkish
government.
The Peoples Confederation of Kurdistan (KCK), the executive council of the PKK,
has called on the Kurdish people to strengthen the 'democratic struggle of the
Kurdish people '. On Friday there were several demonstrations in the Kurdish
regions of Turkey and shops were closed.
On 9 October 1998 the PKK-leader Abdullah Ocalan was expelled from Syria
because of Turkish pressure. After travelling to many countries, Ocalan was
captured by Turkish forces in Kenya in February 1999 with the help of Western
countries.
Kurds will protest against this in Strasbourg, where the European Court of Human
Rights is located.
The Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) is listed as a terrorist group by Turkey,
Europe and America, but rejects the terrorist label. The PKK says it fights for
confederalism in the Middle East and more Kurdish rights in Turkey (Photo:
